The 3DS has 3D top screen and has been discontinued in some places, but you'll find plenty of second hand ones around.
The 3DS line as 5 different Models, each with their own thing. It also all the 3DS Pokémon games, both current and future. For most games, a minor inconvenience, but will prevent transferring from a GBA game.
Due to the lack of GBA port, the functions that use GBA Games don't work. The 3DS line, plays all the DS Pokémon games, exactly like DSi can. It's worth noting almost all online services attached to any of these systems will be gone by the end of the year.
The DS lite is the second of 4 DS line, which are in order of release: DS "Phat", very commonly found DS Lite, DSi which add a single camera in exchange of the GBA port, and the DSi XL which is a larger version on the DSi. The scarcity of Legitimate GBA games will hurt your chances of getting any use out of the GBA port. It doesn't play the Newest games X, Y, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, which are 3DS titles, and the next two due out this year, which is called Sun & Moon. While considered the best "DS" model for a hardcore Pokémon player, as it supports the GBA games and all the DS titles.
